Queens of the Damned is this, the second bout of the season, theme. And yes you do get bonus points for dressing as a vampire. Seriously there will be a prize awarded for the best vampire costume. If you have yet to go to a MRD (Mad Rollin Dolls) bout (ie match, game, fight) you are in for a real treat. The athletes- and yes they really are athletes are greatly entertaining even when the rules seem vague to the laymen. The fans and crowd are very involved which creates for some of the best people watching in Madison. If you have already been ordained by a MRD bout then why not bring a friend or two over to the dark side? It is a truly Madison pastime and it seems the weather will be perfect for being indoors.

Style File Friday: Cyclocross Nationals!

You may have noticed the influx of bikers in Verona/Madison starting Wednesday and chalked it up getting people out on their bikes enjoy the record breaking temps. But you'd be mistaken, it's the Cyclcocross Nationals Championship that run thru Sunday and it is some seriously intense competition. Yes, they did mean to schedule an event in Wisconsin in January and outside of all places and no these record high temps were not part of the plan. Find out more about this mind blowing sport right here. *You will want to wear some waterproof boots you don't mind getting completely covered in mud (I know of some in a certain sale room that would be perfect). It looks like it is going to be the perfect weekend to get out of the house. So take advantage of it while we still have it. Also if you are there on Saturday stop in and say hi to Halley at the Chamber of Commerce tent/booth, she'll be there volunteering.

Plays are great. Plays with children actors in them are even better. I'm not talking about the middle school kind of production, as nice as those are, especially when the kid is yours. I'm talking about the real deal with kids that can act like no ones business. That's what you are in store for with productions put on by CTM. Like this weekend's A Christmas Carol. Here at The Purple Goose, despite not having snow on the ground, it really is starting to feel like the holiday season. We started the giving season even sooner, more about that here and by joining our facebook page. If however you have yet to feel that holiday spirit, and are searching for a jump start, you should check out this weekend's Young St. Nick production at the Middleton Performing Arts Center. I certainly wish I didn't already have plans... If you go to the show promise you'll let me know all about it. Promise?

My husband is a hunter so I always find it laugh-out-loud hilarious that this is the weekend, opening weekend, that Thunder Down Under is in the area. It's almost like a bunch of the ladies in the state will be without husbands and spending time with their girl friends. :) But that isn't the event of the weekend, Madison Women's Expo is. There are a ton of entertaining, educational and just plain fun events planned. You really should check out the schedule, grab a friend and head out of the house. DAIS Fashion Show

This past week The Purple Goose, along with other local boutiques, participated in the first ever Dress For DAIS Fashion Show. It was an incredible night of fashion, fun and friends. But more amazing was the fact that it was powered 100% by volunteers! Over $10,000 was raised for the new DAIS shelter.

Style File Friday: Moving Days

The students are arriving! The students are arriving! The students are arriving! And that means many are moving, swapping apartments and leaving their things behind (or perhaps you, a student, are doing it too). Looking for the perfect chair? Organizers? Or perhaps a moped? Now is the perfect time to scrounge the streets and curbs for all that goodness that gets left behind. Of course be aware that bed bugs are also making a come back. Reliving college by visiting the places I once did is great but getting bed bugs again is not on my do-it-again list. Basically if you need a pair of gloves to feel comfortable taking it home-don't get it.

Much to my husbands delight (did he plan it this way?) I won't be around for all the curb goodies this weekend. But being the junk lover that I am I'd love to see/hear about what it is you found.

Style File Friday: Wisconsin State Fair

It's going to be just another busy summer weekend. Weddings to attend (two for me this weekend), the State Fair, plays, live music, benefits.... And that's just the way summer should be. Remembering how tiring and jam packed this part the year is can be difficult to do in the middle of the snow covered months (notice I didn't use the "W" word). So this is my little prompt (for myself and I guess you if you need it) to suck it up, smile and enjoy it while you've got it. Oh and there is a beautiful weather forecast to boot!

My favorite part of any fair is the animals. Where else does one get to see supremely groomed, fed and taken care of animals of all different breeds, types and sizes in one place? Plus nothing is more cute than a young kid excited about all of the great work they did to get there.

My second favorite is fair food, especially WI fair food. One really must plan on eating at least three meals/day at the fair. There are simply too many choices to have just one food item. Then stock up on lettuce and fat free dressing on your way home as this will be the meals for the following week. ;)

I'm sure you have seen the rowing teams out on the Madison lakes before. Stealth, determined and FAST are a few words that come to mind when I see them. But I have yet to see a Dragon Boat in person and I'm sure it will be an equally fascinating experience. It should be an exciting day of culture, Bucky sightings, and team spirit!

Style File Friday: Strawberry Festival

Sheesh! It's getting difficult to pick which event to feature. This weekend alone there is the Madison Blues Festival, awesome music on the terrace, a great print exhibit opening, the Parade of Homes (is a house really ever finished- I ~~wonder~~ hope) oh and NOT to forget Sunday is Father's Day. Once again my love of food, especially seasonal food, has helped me in my decision. That's not to say beer on the terrace sounds like a bad meal, 'cause it sounds great right about now.

The Strawberry Festival it is! It's strawberries and strawberry treats, people dressed as a strawberry, wine tasting, a 5k/10k run, craft fair, book sale, plant sale....all rolled into one delicious day.

A side note about me: One of my summer jobs growing up was at a strawberry patch. What you picked was weighted and that was how your payment was calculated. That said while picking you could eat all the strawberries you wanted. It would mean you weren't paid as much at the end of the shift because those eaten of course didn't make it into your basket. Three things I learned: 1. You can eat TOO many strawberries. 2. It's worth it unless you have to bike 3 miles home afterwards-which I often did. 3. It was one of the best jobs ever: paid to eat-almost.

So I guess what I am saying is if you plan on running that 5k/10k or taking the Zumba class, eat the strawberries, treats and wine AFTER. Same goes for the kids, inflatable games first and food later. You WILL have a fantastic time!*

A confession: since a young age I have been afflicted with a plant and garden obsession. It's true. So I must say for those of you without a similar affliction the word "horticulture" does not do an event of this kind justice.

Plants and gardens not only have the ability to teach us about life they can change our outlook for the better. Whether it's growing a few flowers on a patio, a family veg patch or a full blown landscape there are things to be learned a every step and that can be overwhelming. Note to new readers: I'm usually fun, happy, honest and try to keep this PG (normally this stands for Purple Goose but in this case actually means the societal rating of PG).

It's Mother's day weekend. We all stop and think about the women that have been in our lives. I'm lucky enough to still have my Mother but when she was my age she wasn't as lucky. For various reasons many of us are no longer able to shower them in praise and love. Cancer is just one of those reasons but it's a big one. It's a sad truth that cancer has and will affect most everyone we know. No I don't mean everyone will struggle with it but someone they love probably will. And that quite frankly sucks. Cancer sucks.

But I don't want to be a downer here. We have a LOT of things to celebrate, be grateful for and to keep fighting for. So without further adiue I present this weekend's event, one that is very close and dear to our hearts: Chelsea's Hope. You'll also notice this is a BRIGHT pink dress for this very bright pink occasion. We're kicking cancer square in the pants. No lazy, indecisive, unopinionated pinks here. Square. In. The. Pants.

Style File Friday: Earth Day Happenings

This is always a day that I think about all the things I could be doing to save the earth, make my community better, and be more involved. It really is quite the list. I usually end up feeling overwhelmed and downtrodden by it. So today I am thinking about all the things I have done and continue to do to make this a better place than I found it.
-Last week I planted our 10 arbor day trees. It's turning into a yearly thing. (psst... Arbor Day is next Friday)
-I've started recycling all of the shops plastic bags. Every shirt, pant, accessory comes in plastic= lots o plastic.
-I'm consciously buying more locally made items (no plastic bags involved and lower carbon footprint).

What are some of the earth friendly habits, skills or projects that you've done?

It's finally warming up. How I love it when our part of earth swings towards the sun. As a result of this warm weather everyone is getting out of the house and I have a greater range of events to choose from. It's verging on the difficult side to choose this week. Dane County Farmer's Market, Midwest Horse Fair (a childhood obsession with the animal at times still prevails), Lit Fest, Family Farm Day at the Children's museum...oh Boy! What will I pick to do?

You already knew the Dane County Farmer's Market would win this one, hands down. My family and I will be making the loop. A bottle of honey, a perennial plant or two and perhaps some asparagus are on my list.

I'll just put it out there... I thought it was spring. I'm supremely disappointed with the latest snowfall (although it was beautiful wasn't it?). I want to crawl back into bed and pull the sheets over my head until all this melts and the greener grass returns. Or I guess I could go hide away in a movie theater all weekend long. Now that I think about it what a perfect weekend for viewing numerous films. Thank you crappy weather. There will be no urges to get my fanny outside, none what so ever. Find a few films you think you'll enjoy and attend guilt free. This is not the weekend to get yard work done.

Oh derby girls. How I admire thee. Of course this is coming from a tennis-playing-contact-avoiding-fragile-girl. Yes, fragile. I'll try not to be too star struck while writing this week's Style File Friday. You're welcome.

Haven't been to a roller derby bout before? Well. Well. Well. You certainly should attend at least one in your life time. Where else can you see dressed up chicas of all shapes and sizes skating their hearts out in the name of team spirit? Eh, and sometimes revenge. If nothing else it will bring out the childhood urges in you to put on your skates (yes, you may need to buy a pair) and skate your heart out. Beware though the falls hurt a lot more now than they did then.

We are so excited to introduce another weekly special blog post, What I Wear Wednesdays! It's not that we feel our outfits are super extraordinary or that you should be enraptured by them but its the process, the troubleshooting, the life behind an outfit that can spawn more creative ways of looking at our closets. So it is our hope that What I Wear Wednesdays will become a source for those moments (AH! what am I going to wear today?!?), get your creative juices going, and get you out the door looking and feeling goosalicious!

Um...what to wear what to wear?.... In advance to my trip to CA and Vegas this weekend this dress was screaming my name. "HALLEY! There is nothing like a sunburst to make you feel like spring is just around the corner." So by adding a scarf and cardi to this short sleeve dress it's not only oh-so-fashionable but also oh-so-I'm-not-freezing-my-ass-off anymore. (I can say that right? It's PG-13.) What I Wear Wednesdays

This Wednesday started with the usual 2-stop kid drop off, then an hour in my son's classroom, and off to work by 10. As usual, I never give myself enough time to get ready (who does?), but I have it down pretty well. Choose a bottom first, pick a top that fits my mood, then layer it up for the 20 degree weather. The jewelry was something I threw together in 30 seconds using an old earring that lost its mate. I decided it went perfectly with my outfit so I turned it into a necklace. (You can do this too. Just grab a chain or leather cord you have lying around and wrap the earwire from your earring to secure it as a pendant. Voila! You have a new necklace.)

Every year when we were kids we had to watch my Mom's favorite Christmas movie, A Wonderful Life. As most things go when you are young I didn't fully understand it but loved it anyway. Now I (think) I get it. Often when life feels like it's whizzing by or I just can't get my barrings straight, which happens more around the holidays, I think of the sentiment found in A Wonderful Life.

I am terrible at singing. And I mean Terrible. For starters I can't find or keep a tune. Don't even get me started on making up words to songs. But dancing, dancing I love and if I could keep a beat I would be fantastic at it. In dance performances growing up I was always that little girl in the group two or three steps behind the others and looking around trying to get back into step. FYI you can see some of the videos I make while dancing around the store on our facebook page.

This weekend Kanopy Dance Company is performing 360. It looks like an exciting exploration of themes. Oh and the performers are professionals, not me.

A timeless hit that can't be seen enough. Well, if you are into the slightly freakiness of it all, like I am. I took a college course on monsters so that might explain a lot. If the idea of heading downtown while all the Freak Festers are out you are in luck this show runs at the Bartell Theatre through Nov. 20. Who doesn't want to prolong the scary things that go bump in the night past Halloween? I know I do.

I'm a big fan of beating the crowds. No, not actually beating them but avoiding them. Next weekend the crowds will be swarming the corn mazes, haunted forests and beyond. Why not get your fright on early?

Chairs, chairs chairs!

A rainbow of locally found and refurbished chairs have found space in The Purple Goose. They are looking for loving homes.
Sheila finds them sad and alone on roadsides, at estate sales and in antique shops. She gives them a new lease on life with the love of a coat of paint and often a modern fabric cushion.
We can't stop day dreaming of a dining room table surrounded with these beauts, friends sitting in each one, everyone having a fabulous time.

Style File Friday: Andy Warhol Photographic Studies

By now you know I am constantly taking photos of all the items that come through the shop, much of it ends up here, on the web. Others are fleeting, moving out too fast for a snap shot. Andy Warhol captured the moments in his life with snap shots. It's great for remembering where you were and what you were doing and with who. We often look back at our fashion snap shots and comment, "That was so great! I forgot all about it." Such is life when you remember the moments.
Most of us are unlikely to have a life like that of Andy Warhol but our moments will be just as precious, even if not filled with celebrities (if you shop at PG you'll look like one).
Get out, enjoy the weather and gather a few snapshots of your own.

Style File Friday: Giant Pumpkin Regatta

You did read that right. The UW horticulture society will be racing giant pumpkins at noon this Saturday at the Memorial Union lakefront. The students grow the pumpkins, clean out the insides (No, I don't know if they make pies or roast the seeds) and then race through a course out on the lake. This is sure to be an entertaining event for the whole community. Find out more info on the Isthmus Daily Page.

Making of a Window: Flower Garland

Garland can amp up any event. Perhaps your home is in need of a little whimsy or a little one has a birthday coming up. The possibilities are endless. You asked for it so below I'll describe how you can make the flower garland we used in our Birthday window.

Supplies: -Sewing machine
-Paper or fabric for the flowers
-fabric for the string: A basic light-medium weight woven. Not stretchy or knit.

How to:
1. Cut out your shapes. Get the little ones to help with this. We cut out flowers but you could do anything really. Circles could be equally interesting and easy for everyone to do.

2. cut/rip strips of fabric. I cut a small 1"ish snip into the selvege of the fabric and then rip it into strips. Don't worry here the fabric will rip into a neat strips. Just rip away! Snip. Rip away and repeat.

3. fold the two edges of the strip towards the center and then in half (see photo above). This should look like bias tape.

4. Insert the flowers at intervals. No measuring here (unless your personality dictates it). Sew a little and add in a flower. Make certain you are stitching through the flower and fabric string at the same time.

5. Join a new fabric strip as the first strip runs out by inserting it as with the flowers above.

6. Continue adding new flowers and strips as you go. When you run out of flowers or fabric you're done! :)

7. Hang and pin! Enjoy your garland!

Okay, this is a little heavy on self promotion, I know but I prefer to think of it as sharing the knowledge. So get excited because Purple Goose trunk shows are a new twist on The Goose on the Go, something we have been doing successfully for just over a year. First it was home parties and you all loved those so much we've made them even bigger and better! Now.... a trunk show featuring many of the local artist and designers you see at our shops. A TON more inventory to choose from and you get to play the buyer! The catch? There aren't any but it only happens on the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Saturday of every month at the Madison location. I'm excited I'm rambling, my apologies.

Style File Friday: Wisconsin Ironman

When I was 15 I thought I could run, bike and swim enough in order to be the youngest women to complete the ironman. I never did complete that dream and that's fine. I'm just happy I can run a mile, leisurely ride my bike or wade in water with friends. The determination, perservence and dedication of those participating in this weekends Ironman is truely commendable. I still dream of it. :) Get out and cheer them on, they deserve it! Style File Friday: Venetian Boat Parade by Dane Buy Local

This weekend is the annual Venetian Boat Parade put on by Dane Buy Local. The gist: local businesses decorate boats and then the fully decked (no pun intended) boats parade around Lake Mendota. Fireworks included. And it's FREE! For the details visit Dane Buy Local.

Style File Friday: Blooming Butterflies

I become completely distracted, hold my breath and can't keep from staring...when a monarch flutters by. It started at a young age, growing up on 20 acres of land in Northern WI I would chase them, not wanting the beauty to leave my sight. I can stop myself from chasing (just imagine a grown woman running frantically through the city streets looking up at the sky) but I hope with time they don't lose their remaining magical effects on me.

Through August 8th you can see an inordinate number of butterflies at Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Chasing them is probably off limits but staring and learning interesting tid bits is greatly encouraged. For more information visit the Olbrich Botanical Garden's events page.

I know. A dress on a bike? Yes! A pair of little sport shorts will hide perfectly underneath, making a dress ideal for riding a bike in style. Plus there is no chance of an embarrassing flashing. In place of jewelry I've added a scarf. It's shown here tied around the neck or tie it around your head to keep your hair in place (but your mom would prefer if you wore your helmet). Few things beat the sight of a floral scarf flowing cheerfully behind a bike. The best part about this outfit is no one would have guessed that you arrive by bike because you'll look so fashionable! With a plethora of events happening this weekend it was difficult to choose just one. So I cheated a little and picked two, please don't tell. I think my event luck will be diffferent when winter rolls back in (sheesh- Winter? What winter?). All I'm saying is at some point I might be making up these events, that's all. Art Fair on (off) the Square is this weekend! I wait all year for this and one of these times I'll acutally come home with something. Paintings, mixed media, beyond believeable photographs, textiles (my favorite), ceramics, the list goes on. You simply can't beat having all of these beautiful things right on the sqaure, especially when the weather is lovely (as it will be). I sincerely say, enjoy.

Style File Friday: Rhythm and Booms

If you are in Madison for the weekend of the 4th of July chances are you will be enjoying Rhythm and Booms, the Midwest's largest fireworks display and probably eating en plein air. Well, so will I and 150 of my friends and family. It's really a belated wedding reception as my husband and I were married in December, not exactly the best time of year for a bbq in Wisconsin.

Instead of the traditional red, white and blue garb I've chosen a white with patchwork tube dress/top. It's ideal for being cool in the sunny heat of Saturday. You'll be comfortable yet stylish without being over the top. Oh, and if you want to accessorize with Red or blue that will look fantastic too!

Style File Friday: Waiting for Godot

Going to a play can be one of the most refreshing and inspiring things to do. It can jump start creative juices and bring back personal memories. I had the joy of being behind the scenes in a few high school and college plays so I am always thinking about all the people it takes to put the production on. Even without having experience behind-the-scenes the excitement and exhileration of the performers, ingenious props, intricate costumes, delectible colors and plot line come together right in front of you, making for a truly intimate experience.

Today is the opening night for Waiting for Godot, a play being put on by The American Players Theatre. They describe it as, "Does it qualify as irony that a play whose central concern is communication has inspired so much consternation over the years? No matter. Considered by many to be one of, if not the, most influential play of the 20th century, Waiting for Godot asks the big questions in ways few other works of art could: how do we get up every morning, fight through every day, and go to sleep every evening never knowing whether our hopes and dreams might be granted? Godot asks — with theatricality, tension, humor, and grace — that we rethink the world and our place within it."

Style File Friday: Parade of Homes

Introducing: Style File Fridays! This is where we'll feature goose-a-licious outfits alongside local events where they, along with you, can make a stylish debut.

I probably shouldn't admit it but when I go for walks around the neighborhood at night I like peeking into other's homes. No, I'm not a peeping Tom I just like the decorating ideas it can lend (sometimes what not to do) as well as the perspective it gives on life. As life and problems often seem easier when you are on the outside looking in- it reminds me to take a step back. But I digress. I do think that it is only natural to want to see how others live, decorate and landscape. Which is probably why the Madison Builder's Association's Parade of Homes has been drawing crowds since 1950. To learn more about it visit www.maba.org.

Summer Starts Today!

Well, for many of the kids it does. School is out and sun filled days are on the horizon. Yippie! For many reasons I always remember this time of year fondly. Everything is green and blooming, possibilities seem endless and we can play outside! Then there are the people that make it especially exciting. My bus driver, Pete, would have a count down to the last day of school at the front of the bus. Being the first kids on the bus every morning my sister and I had the privilege (and responsibility) of tearing off yesterday's number to reveal today's. How exciting! 1 day left! And there would be candy too! I'm sure you have lovely memories too. And now so do the kids going through their last day of school!

So, while we look forward to the days ahead and the possibilities that they bring we take a moment to look back and say thank you. Thank you to the teachers, bus drivers, crossing guards, numerous staff members and everyone else that makes us smile.

I like designing everything and despite what my hubby might say I don't think I am the only one. From paint colors to reupholstering furniture and clothing I love customizing all of it!

So, when one of our locally jewelry artist, Bridget, was telling us how her button pendants and beaded necklaces can be mixed and matched a light went on. How great would it be to let you be the ones to do the mixing and matching? AWESOME! We simply can't wait to see what you will come up with.

Safe Sex in The City

This past Friday in collaboration with Studio Quest we put on our first fundraiser fashion show titled, "Safe Sex in the City" with all proceeds benefiting Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. It was a fantastic evening of close friends, local designers, wine and Wisconsin brewed beer, food donated by local restaurants (see below).... Our goal was to bring the community together to celebrate the great things Planned Parenthood has been doing for us for 75years.

Our latest commercial is out! Have you seen it on T.V.? Don't dispair we have it here for you!

As many of you know we made our first T.V. commercial last fall. We had a blast doing it and were anxiously looking forward to doing it again.

We were outside on a chilly spring morning near the Capitol Square in downtown Madison. We spent the morning doing makeup (Thanks Fran!) and hair (Bridget @ Studio Quest). The better half of the afternoon was spent changing into oufits, getting on location and finding the right light, taking photos (Joe Stadele @ NBC 15 and Jennifer Hassrick) and of course having a BLAST! Last but not least our models, Katie and Sandy, were simply phenomenal. Thank you to everyone mentioned as well as all of the behind-the-scenes help!

Spring Trends for Handbags

It's time to pack away the black and bring out the bright- Spring is finally here! Styles are constantly changing, so we wanted to fill you in on the hottest trends for Spring handbags. Best of all, many of these trends can be found at The Purple Goose for your shopping convenience!

-Perforated Leather. A big hit this spring- you can expect to see this trend pretty much everywhere- and at The Goose!
-Bright Hues. Bright colors in general are going to be big this coming spring. Not only will you see the usual pastels like pinks and light blues, but you will also see neon colors in the mix as well as jewel tones like purples, blues, and greens.
-Boho. Bohemian handbags with hippie influence are back. Look for slouchy hobos and bags featuring tie-dye, tassles, fringe, and tribal prints.

Top 10 Cold Weather Must Haves

Now that the temps are falling, do you find yourself struggling to come up with cute outfits that make you feel good & keep you warm at the same time? Sweaters are great, but we tend to feel frumpy wearing sweaters every single day. The trick is layering (you knew I was gonna say that, didn't you?) here are just a few things you need to do the trick:

Long sleeve t-shirts in all the basic colors (black, white, brown, grey); throw these under most any lighter weight top.
Tank tops will do the same; whether they're visible or not they'll keep ya warm
Leggings: perfect under a tunic, sweater, or just for lounging around the house!
A statement coat (step out of your comfort zone with a bright color or pattern).
Elbow length gloves- fingerless or bright colored. Last year's standard-length gloves simply just won't do.
Eternity scarves, one of the season's key accessories- layer it over a dress, coat, or winter sweater!
Opaque tights (we have them in almost every color you can imagine!) Great with a fall dress you can't bear to put away.
A quirky clutch purse. Make a statement at your next holiday party; embellishments and ruffles are the season's top trends!
A colorful wool scarf- the easiest and warmest way to brighten up an outfit (and we've got plenty to go around!)
Statement jewelery- whether it's a bib necklace or a stylish cuff bracelet, nothing says winter like an eye-catching piece of jewelry!
